What is a Dynamometer? (Rolling Road)

A Dynamometer or Dyno is a device for measuring the torque and therefore power delivered at the wheels of a car or motorbike. Usually, the drive wheels are used to spin a pair of rollers. These allow the vehicle to remain stationary while connected up to test equipment. The rollers drive a heavy flywheel, allowing torque and power to be calculated from the time taken to accelerate the flywheel.

What is a Dashboard Dyno?

Essentially, it is a method to measure torque and power while the vehicle is driven on normal roads rather than a rolling road. It allows power and torque curves to be plotted against engine rpm or distance runs to be timed. Measurement results can be recorded for analysis or viewed live on the dashboard.
